Coco Gauff puts Paris Olympics in same bracket as Grand Slams

Coco Gauff (20) announced that missing out on the Tokyo Olympics due to her positive COVID test was disappointing, but she is determined to make her Games debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She believes that winning a medal at the Olympics would hold the same significance as a Grand Slam victory this year.

Gauff expressed her excitement to compete at the Olympics, which will begin on July 27 at Roland Garros, the same venue where she will also compete for a second Grand Slam title at the French Open this month.

“The Olympics is of utmost importance to me. It holds the same level of importance as the Grand Slams,” Gauff stated during a press conference at the Italian Open. “I don’t rank it above or below just because it’s my first time participating. It’s a new experience for me.”

Gauff acknowledged the challenges of transitioning from grass to clay courts since she has never done it before. However, she is not putting excessive pressure on herself and plans to fully embrace the Olympic experience, hoping to have multiple opportunities in the future.

Currently, Gauff’s main focus is preparing for the upcoming French Open, which commences on May 26. She emphasized the significance of improving her serve as a key factor in her pursuit of another Grand Slam title after her triumph at the U.S. Open last year.

“Right now, my main goal is to serve better than I did last week,” Gauff explained. “I feel that my overall game is improving, and if I can continue to work on my serve, it will greatly benefit my performance at Roland Garros.”
