Australia striker Sam Kerr ruled out of Paris Olympics

Australian striker Sam Kerr, known for her talismanic presence on the field, has officially been ruled out of the Olympics. This decision comes after a serious knee injury disrupted her season with Chelsea almost five months ago.

As the captain of the Matildas and one of the most prominent figures in women’s football, Kerr suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in January. Her father had already stated months ago that she would not be fit for the Paris Olympics.

However, the absence of official confirmation left room for speculation until national coach Tony Gustavsson recently announced a 23-player squad for upcoming friendlies against China. The squad announcement confirmed that both Kerr and attacker Amy Sayer, who also suffered an ACL injury, would not be available for selection for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Kerr, who was present to celebrate Chelsea’s recent FA Women’s Super League title, holds the record as Australia’s most prolific striker with 69 goals in 128 appearances. Despite her achievements on the field, she has faced challenges off the field as well. In March, she was charged with a “racially aggravated offence” in Britain following an altercation with a police officer. Kerr has pleaded not guilty, and her club, Chelsea, has expressed their unwavering support.

Looking ahead, Kerr is expected to face trial in February 2025. Meanwhile, Australia’s upcoming matches against China on May 31st and June 3rd will be their final home games before the Olympics in July and August.
