Tony Mowbray steps down as Birmingham City manager after surgery

Birmingham City announced on Tuesday that Tony Mowbray will be stepping down as manager of the club.

The 60-year-old made this decision in order to focus on his recovery after undergoing major surgery. Mowbray had taken a break from his coaching duties in February and officially went on medical leave in March.

The club stated that he has chosen to prioritize his health and spend time with his family. Garry Cook, the CEO of Birmingham City, commended Mowbray for informing them of his decision promptly after the end of the season.

Cook also mentioned that this provides the club with an opportunity to conduct a thorough search for the right leader to take the club forward, ensuring that the new manager is in place before the start of pre-season. Mowbray had joined Birmingham in January following Wayne Rooney’s dismissal.

During his tenure, he achieved four victories out of eight matches, including consecutive wins against his former clubs Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland in the Championship.

Gary Rowett was appointed as the interim manager for the remaining eight games of the season, but unfortunately, Birmingham City was relegated to League One despite their win over Norwich City on the final day.
