Euro 2024: Germany Off To Perfect Start, Thrash Scotland 5-1 In Opener

Hosts Germany got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a perfect start following a dominant 5-1 win against Scotland in Group A on Friday.

Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can all got Germany’s goals.

Scotland pulled a goal back off an own goal by Antonio Rudiger.

Scotland played most parts of the game with 10 men after Ryan Porteous was sent off.

Wirtz opened the scoring for Germany on 10 minutes before Musiala made it 2-0 on 19 minutes.

With a minute left to play in the first half Porteous was shown a straight red card and a penalty awarded to Germany for a reckless tackle on Ilkay Gundogan inside the box.

Arsenal forward Havertz converted the spot kick to put the host 3-0 ahead in the first minute of stoppage time.

Germany added a fourth off the boot of Fullkrug on 68 minutes but Scotland pulled a goal back on 87 minutes thanks to an own goal by Rudiger.

In the 93rd minute Can added the fifth goal for Germany to cap off a brilliant start to the tournament.

Meanwhile, three games will hold on Saturday as Hungary and Switzerland will square off in Group A, and in Group B, it will be Spain vs Croatia and champions Italy vs Albania.
