Euro 2024: Police Shoot Man With Axe Ahead Poland Vs Netherlands

A major operation is taking place in central Hamburg after a man with an axe threatened police officers, officials in the German city say.

Police say they shot and seriously injured the man, who is receiving medical attention.

Media reports, via BBC, say the incident took place near a fanzone for supporters of the Netherlands football team.

The Netherlands are playing Poland in the city in the Euros later on Sunday.

According to a police statement a man threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an “incendiary device”.

Media reports say the attack took place at about 12:30 local on the Reeperbahn, a main street and nightlife area in the city.

Meanwhile, in some of the games played so far at the Euros, hosts Germany thrashed Scotland 5-1, Spain overcame Croatia 3-0, Switzerland saw off Hungary 3-0 and champions Italy beat Albania 2-1.
