Chelsea Champions League Winner Retires From Professional Football

Former Chelsea and Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand today (Tuesday) announced his retirement from professional football.

Bertrand, who joined Chelsea from Gillingham’s youth academy as a 16-year-old, started on the left-side of midfield in Chelsea’s Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich in 2012.

It was Chelsea’s first triumph in the competition as they won 4-3 on penalties after regulation time ended 1-1.

Bertrand also helped the south-west London club win the FA Cup in the 2011-12 season and the Europa League the following campaign.

Bertrand made 57 first-team appearances for Chelsea but was loaned out to six clubs, including at Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

In 2014, he left Stamford Bridge to join Southampton — where he played 240 matches across seven seasons.

The full-back joined Leicester City on a two-year contract in 2021 but made just 11 appearances for the club, whom he left last summer.

Bertrand — who was capped nine times at senior international level for England — had been without a club since leaving Leicester and on Tuesday (June 18) announced his retirement from playing.
