Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Andriy Lunin is set to stay at Real Madrid this season despite his contract running out next year.
The Ukrainian goalkeeper stepped into the void left by the injured Thibaut Courtois last year, taking the gloves from previous back-up option Kepa Arrizabalaga and making some vital saves on the club’s way to a La Liga and Champions League double.
Lunin made no secret of his desire to play regular first-team football over the summer but recently made a decision on his future, reportedly being ready to run down his current deal before leaving on a free transfer next year.
That plan has seemingly been confirmed by Ancelotti, who is set to call on the 25-year-old as his reserve goalie for the 2024/25 season.
Speaking after Madrid’s 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid, Ancelotti revealed: “Yes, he is going to stay.”
Kepa initially filled in during Courtois’ absence but some shaky displays led to the Spaniard losing his place. There had been rumours of Los Blancos returning to the Bernabeu for another season-long loan, but he is now set to seal a move to Premier League side Bournemouth instead.
Courtois is back in the Madrid starting XI and will have no international commitments to distract him after announcing he would not play for Belgium while manager Domenico Tedesco is in charge.

Writing on Instagram, he revealed: “I want to address the Belgian fans and supporters of our national team.
“I feel immense love and pride in representing my country on the pitch, as well as every one of you who supports the Red Devils. I feel privileged to have had the honour of wearing the national jersey. Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined being able to do so more than 100 times.
“Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management. In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility. However, looking forward, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary atmosphere of cordiality.
“The Federation, with whom I have had several discussions, accepts my position and the reasons that led me to this painful but coherent decision. I regret possibly disappointing some fans, but I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium, as it closes a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals. Thank you for your unwavering support, love, and understanding.”
