Harry Kane has suggested he could continue playing for England late into his career in a midfield role.
The Three Lions skipper earned his 100th senior cap after starting in Tuesday’s UEFA Nations League victory against Finland. Kane scored both goals in a 2-0 victory at Wembley.
In recent years, Kane has developed his game by dropping into midfield and spreading play with his excellent range of passing – a freedom he has been allowed to express again at international level under interim boss Lee Carsley.
Speaking to the press after an emotional landmark night, Kane opened the door to playing in midfield to extend his England career.
“I feel I could play as number or number ten, even areas in midfield,” Kane said.
“It depends on the manager I’m playing with. Who knows, later in my career a manager might want to use me deeper to use my passing to hurt teams. But now I want to keep scoring the goals I need to score to play as a number nine.”

Kane’s brace took him to a whopping 68 goals in his 100 matches for England, extending his lead as the country’s all-time leading scorer.
Prior to Tuesday’s victory, Kane outlined his aim to become the first England player to score 100 goals for the country.
“It’s possible, it’s there,” he said of scoring a century of goals. “What is it, 34 goals [now 32]? It is strange, I have touched on it a bit, 100 caps have come round so quick – especially the last few years playing three major tournaments in such a short space of time. In those years I’ve done around 15, 16, 17 caps a year whereas a normal year would be 10.
“The goals were similar. I felt I was on 30 goals and then, bam, I went to 50 and 60. It is definitely there and definitely possible. I feel like I am in a good place and these are good targets to try to reach. Some people may see them as unrealistic but I would rather go for something unrealistic and not quite make it rather than be comfortable just saying I will be happy with 70 or 80 goals.”
