Thomas Tuchel has insisted he wants to “make England successful and the supporters proud” after being appointed the nation’s new manager.
The FA confirmed the appointment of the ex-Bayern Munich and Chelsea manager on Wednesday, with Tuchel actually signing his deal on 8 October. Tuchel is set to take charge of the Three Lions on January 2025 on an 18-month contract.
The German is set to take over from interim boss Lee Carsley, who will oversee the international games in November against Greece and the Republic of Ireland before returning to his previous post as the Under-21 boss.
Tuchel arrives with a wealth of winning experience under his belt, having notably won the UEFA Champions League, three domestic league titles and the Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award for 2021.
Speaking upon his announcement as the new England boss, the manager expressed his excitement at the opportunity and set some goals for himself while in charge.
“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already,” said Tuchel.

“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.
“Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”
Anthony Barry, Tuchel’s former assistant at Bayern, will take up the post as assistant coach with the Three Lions too.
Reacting after his appointment was officially confirmed, he said: “For any Englishman in football, working with the national team is the pinnacle and I didn’t hesitate when Thomas asked me to come and join him again.
“I know what a great place St. George’s Park is and how much of an advantage it gives our England teams, and the support it gives to coaches. This squad is very talented and have done so much to bring the country together, I look forward to meeting and working with them on this exciting project.”
