Mohamed Salah broke the all-time record for most Premier League games with both a goal and an assist with his heroics in Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Newcastle United on Wednesday.

The Egyptian netted twice and set up his side’s other goal – the sixth time in the Premier League this season he has been involved in every goal Liverpool have scored in a game – to take his tally to 13 goals and eight assists in just 14 games.

It was the 37th time in Salah’s Premier League career that he has both scored and assisted in a single game, breaking the previous record of 36 held by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.

Salah reached that tally in 214 fewer appearances than Rooney and, given his current form, he is likely to add to his return before the end of the season.

Just how long Salah will have to increase his statistics is up in the air. The 32-year-old is approaching the final six months of his current Liverpool contract and there has yet to be any signs of an extension being agreed.

Manager Arne Slot confessed after the game that he could not predict what will happen with Salah’s contract, despite the winger’s public frustration towards the fact he has not yet been offered a new deal.

Unlike Salah, Liverpool are believed to have already tabled an offer to centre-back Virgil van Dijk – the proposal fell short of the Dutchman’s demands – but the expectation is that Salah will soon be handed a formal offer before he is able to speak with overseas sides.
