Manchester City were at their blistering best as they celebrated Erling Haaland’s new contract with a 6-0 annihilation of Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
The champions started the day in eighth place in the Premier League, owing to positive results for Aston Villa and Bournemouth on Saturday.
They were in no mood to mess around from the first whistle in East Anglia, taking a three-goal lead into the half-time interval as Phil Foden (2) and Mateo Kovacic took the game away from Ipswich.
Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and substitute James McAtee inflicted more damage after the break, reminding those who have doubted Pep Guardiola and his players that there’s plenty of quality left in the tank.
Foden and Doku were superb in particular, showing great attacking dynamism and fluidity of movement, and City are now up into the Premier League’s top four as a result of their win – they do still trail leaders Liverpool by 12 points though.
