Liverpool will not entertain offers for Darwin Nunez in what remains of the January transfer window, reports say, amid interest from the Saudi Pro League.

Nunez hasn’t been the prolific goalscoring success Liverpool fans would have hoped for off the back of his £85m transfer from Benfica, where he netted 34 times in 2021/22 alone.

The Uruguayan has enjoyed moments and flashes, ultimately struggling for consistency and forging a reputation for squandering chances. He has made 29 appearances so far this season under the management of Arne Slot, but is primarily a squad player, starting only seven Premier League games.

Even with that status, Nunez is not likely to leave the club in the coming days.

The Athletic writes that the 25-year-old had been a target for Al Nassr, the club where former Premier League stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane and Aymeric Laporte are based. But Liverpool’s reported stance is that Nunez is not for sale at this late stage of the window, implying that the possibility of him leaving could be dependent on sourcing a suitable replacement.

Nunez is viewed as an “important part” of the Liverpool squad, although there is expected to be a “significant market” for the forward in the summer if the Reds do decide to sell.

Slot has tended to start Nunez more willingly in the Champions League. Domestically, Diogo Jota began the season as the manager’s first choice ‘number nine’, with Luis Diaz mainly picking up that mantle since the Portuguese’s injury problems in October.

Half of Nunez’s four Premier League goals this season were scored in a 25-minute cameo against Brentford earlier this month. His only Champions League goal prior to matchday eight came against RB Leipzig in October, while he netted in the Carabao Cup against Southampton in December.
