After guiding Liverpool to a 2-0 win at Portman Road on the opening weekend of the 2024/25 season, Arne Slot takes charge of his first Premier League game at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds will battle a Brentford side that has a wretched record on Merseyside. Thomas Frank’s Bees are yet to score in a Premier League game at Anfield having made their bow in the competition four years ago.
Slot is unlikely to deviate much from the team he named at Ipswich last weekend, with some projecting just a single change to his starting XI for Sunday’s game.
Here’s how Liverpool could line up against Brentford this weekend.

GK: Alisson – There will not be a question over Alisson’s status as Liverpool’s number one while the Brazilian is fit. He started the season with a clean sheet at Portman Road but could be busier on Sunday.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – Slot’s utilisation of the unicorn full-back will be very intriguing at the start of his reign. The England international has been used here, there and everywhere over the past 12 months.
CB: Ibrahima Konate – Konate replaced Jarell Quansah at half-time last weekend, with the young Liverpool defender supposedly dealing with a muscle injury heading into Sunday’s game. Konate’s going to get the nod.
CB: Virgil van Dijk – Van Dijk will have to have his wits about him against a Brentford team that excel on the counter-attack. He enjoyed a stress-free start to the new season last week.
LB: Andy Robertson – The Scotsman shook off some early rust last weekend after not enjoying much of a pre-season. Robertson will likely still be feeling himself into the new season on Sunday.
CM: Ryan Gravenberch – With Liverpool not yet acquiring a holding midfielder (or any fresh face) Gravenberch will be aiming to lock down a role in front of Slot’s defence.
CM: Alexis Mac Allister – The Argentine did impress in a deeper position last season but was bought to shine in a more advanced role. Mac Allister will take on a more fluid midfield function under Slot.
RW: Mohamed Salah – The inevitable Egyptian got his ball rolling for 2024/25 last weekend as he scored Liverpool’s second in their 2-0 win. Salah’s scored five times in as many games against Brentford.
AM: Dominik Szoboszlai – Szoboszlai was one of several players who improved drastically in the second half at Ipswich last week as Liverpool eventually blew their opponents away. The Hungarian is hoping to replicate the quick start he had to his Reds career to open up 2024/25.
LW: Luis Diaz – With Brentford poised to sit deep in a bid to contain the hosts, Slot will look to Diaz to make darting runs in behind the condensed space between goalkeeper Mark Flekken and the Bees’ defence.
ST: Diogo Jota – Slot has several forward options to call upon, but he’ll likely retain his faith in Jota, who opened the scoring at Portman Road after missing a sitter at the start of the second half.
