3 best WSL teams: September 2024

Last month, the 2024/25 WSL season kicked off and it’s been a strong start to the campaign.

Only two teams won their first two matches in Chelsea and Manchester United, although Manchester City are currently top of the standings having played a game more than their rivals. At the bottom end of the table, Everton and West Ham United are level on just one point, as well as goal difference.

The biggest results of the first few matchdays include Chelsea’s 7-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace, as well as Brighton & Hove Albion’s comfortable 4-0 win over Everton. Arsenal and City have already faced each other, but played out a 2-2 draw at the Emirates.

Here’s 90min’s ranking of the top three WSL teams from the opening two matchdays in September.

After last season’s inconsistency and fifth place finish, it’s been a strong start to the new season for United. They beat West Ham 3-0 in their opening game, and followed that up with a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Everton.

Grace Clinton has settled back into life at the club nicely, scoring in both of those victories in September, while two clean sheets bode well defensively. Greater tests are to come, with matches against Tottenham, Brighton and Arsenal coming up, but there’s confidence radiating around Marc Skinner’s side.

After a strong summer of recruitment, many anticipated Brighton would be the surprise package this season. If the opening two matchdays are anything to go by, that may turn out to be the case.

They cruised to a victory against Everton at home in their opening game, and although they were beaten by Manchester City on matchday two, it was a very tight contest. Just one goal separated the two teams, and the Seagulls were always in the game.

As expected, last season’s WSL champions have started the new season strongly. They edged a narrow 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on matchday one, but put seven past Crystal Palace without response a week later.

They are yet to face one of their title rivals, with Arsenal up next, but they have started as they mean to go on. Sonia Bompastor’s side have the best goal difference, despite the fact they have played a game less than their closest contenders at this stage, and you can only see Chelsea going from strength to strength.
