Liverpool manager Arne Slot is refusing to get carried away with the idea that his team are on the brink of becoming Premier League champions following the latest round of results.

Even with Liverpool dropping recent points against Everton and Aston Villa, Arsenal’s shock defeat at the hands of West Ham United on Saturday, combined with Sunday’s comprehensive and perfectly executed win over Manchester City, has put the Reds 11 points clear.

With Arsenal not in great shape because of injuries, others even further back, and only 11 games of the league season for Liverpool left to play, many saw the 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium as a symbolic moment in the 2024/25 title race.

Slot, previously an Eredivisie champion with Feyenoord, played down the significance.

“I am mostly happy because we won at the Etihad, and that is not something that happens a lot. It was my first time here but not many managers or teams win here, so we should be happy for that,” the Dutchman remarked in a post-match interview with BBC Match of the Day.

“It was only a week ago that it was a tough win against Wolves, so I know all 11 games left are difficult for different reasons. A lot of challenges ahead of us but it is a good position to be in.”

Seven of Liverpool’s remaining league fixtures are at home at Anfield, stacking the odds of a record-equalling 20th English league title even more in their favour.

Left-back Andrew Robertson said he is happy if fans want to get carried away, but insists the players will not let the complacency of thinking they are already champions creep in.

“We know our fans will get carried away with this performance and we have always said that if that happens we are usually doing something right on the pitch,” he also told BBC Match of the Day.

“Certainly it won’t be on us to get carried away until we are champions. We have to keep pushing and there is no place for complacency.”
